Peterson Concert: Jimmy Greene Quintet

July may be sizzling outside, but it's the perfect time to experience the cool sounds of the Jimmy Greene Quintet, one of Connecticut's premier and most innovative jazz quintets. Jazz leader Jimmy Greene, saxophonist, composer, recording artist and educator will melt your hearts with his soulful sounds and energetic rhythms. Joining Jimmy on stage will be the following outstanding musical artists: bassist Vicente Archer, drummer Mark Whitfield, Jr., guitarist Mike Moreno and pianist Aaron Goldberg.

Escape the heat and register for a seat for this summertime concert. The concert begins at 3:00 PM and doors open at 2:30 PM. This is a free concert and all are welcome.

A native of Connecticut, Jimmy Greene is one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation. Greene has recorded thirteen albums as a bandleader and has appeared on close to 100 as a sideman. His newest recording, As We Are Now, is slated for release in late 2024. Greene’s 2014 release Beautiful Life (Mack Avenue), dedicated to the life of his late daughter Ana, received two GRAMMY® Award nominations – one for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and another for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals for his song “When I Come Home.”

Greene has also garnered awards in composition from ASCAP/IAJE, Chamber Music America, Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism and the Greater Hartford Arts Council. He recently won the Rising Star – Soprano Saxophone category in DownBeat Magazine’s 66th Annual Critics Poll and as a youngster was named First Runner-Up in the 1996 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Greene performs worldwide with his quartet and quintet, in addition to Ron Carter’s Foursight Quartet. He has also recorded and/or performed in the bands of Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Harry Connick, Jr., Tom Harrell, Avishai Cohen, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Barron and Lewis Nash, among many others.

Greene is Professor of Music and Co-Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn., and has previously taught at the University of Manitoba, Purchase College (State University of New York), and the Hartt School. He regularly travels to institutions around the world to give clinics, masterclasses, keynote speeches and presentations. Greene earned a doctorate degree from the Manhattan School of Music, a masters degree in music from Boston University and a bachelor’s degree in music from The Hartt School, where he was a protégé of legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean.
