Dr. Harry Mamaysky will explain that planning for a financially secure retirement consists of two steps:

• Determine how much you expect to spend in retirement, how much of that will be covered by Social Security or other defined benefit plans, and how much remains to be covered by your investment portfolio. Harry will introduce the concept of a safe spending rule, i.e., how much can be spent from your investments every year without depleting your savings, which will allow you to back into how much money needs to be set aside when you retire.
• Consider how much you need to save now in order to achieve your retirement goals. Throughout the talk, Harry will emphasize the importance of thinking about market uncertainty and risk management. He will share historical data on stock and bond market performance, as well as suggestions for future self study.

There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Both current retirees and those planning to retire in either 1 or 40 years will benefit from this conversation.

About the Speaker

Dr. Harry Mamaysky is a partner at QuantStreet Capital, which offers its clients model and market analytics, wealth management, and investing services through separately managed accounts. Harry is also a professor at Columbia Business School, where he is the director of the Program for Financial Studies. Harry’s research focuses on the application of quantitative techniques to investing and financial planning. Harry is a frequent industry and academic speaker. Prior to Columbia, Harry spent years in finance practice, rising to senior portfolio manager at Citigroup, and later serving on the firm’s Risk Executive Committee. Harry was a professor at the Yale School of Management, which he joined after earning his PhD in Finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds BS and MS degrees in Computer Science and a BA in Economics from Brown University.
