Automate Excel with Python – Tips for Professionals Online

You know Excel but now need something more to save time and stay relevant in the Age of AI. Learning a bit of Python lets you keep your spreadsheets as inputs and outputs but automate everything in between.

This session introduces Python by mapping its similarities to Excel:

· Designed for beginners.

· Easily recognizes the difference between numbers, letters and dates

· Organizes data into the same columns and rows as everyday workbooks.

The workshop concludes with a do-it-yourself project in which you read an Excel file into Python, replicate a COUNTIF formula and save the results back to Excel.

 

This will be a hybrid program, with seats available both online and in the Learning Lab. It will be recorded.

Author John Wengler’s career covered diverse disciplines including journalism, community planning, and corporate governance but writing provides the common thread. He edited his campus engineering magazine, edited an American Planning Association newsletter and published Managing Energy Risk (PennWell, 2001). After teaching himself Python, John released Automate Excel with Python (No Starch Press, 2026) to help others save time and stay relevant in the Age of AI.
